How to Make Your Own Compost |
|
Making compost is not that hard, after all Mother Nature has been making it for millions of years. For our purposes we will expand on what Mother Nature does naturally.
In nature, leaves and other matter collect on the forest floor and decompose. To speed this process up it is helpful to collect your ingredients for the compost and concentrate it in one place. You can make a compost pile out of many different materials, from old wood pallets to a ring of wire fencing. All you really need is some place to confine the material, preferably somewhere in full sun.
To make compost you need five things; green matter, brown matter, air, water and time. The green matter can come from things like; grass trimmings, egg shells, orange rinds, vegetable trimmings and coffee grounds. Brown matter can be from; dried leaves, straw, wood chips, paper bags and drier lint.
The green and brown materials need to be layered with a ratio of 1 part green to 2 parts brown in the compost pile. The pile needs to be kept evenly moist but not to wet. Occasionally the pile needs to be turned to let air get into it. The only other thing to do is give it time to decompose.
