How to Build a Pot Tower I recently tried my hand at putting together a pot tower in my retail garden center and I will give you a step by step in this article.
The materials needed are one 8 to 10 inch clay pot, four 6 inch clay pots, potting soil and a metal rod about 4 feet long. I used a ¼ inch rod I had on hand and it was a little limber. I think the best thing would be to get one from a farm supply dealer, get one that is used as a post for electric fences.
As for plants, things such as sedums or other succulents which are drought tolerant are perfect for this.
Once you have your supplies and plants, it is time
to decide where you are going to assemble the tower. Take the larger
pot and place it in the chosen spot, making sure it is level. Take
your metal rod and stick it into the ground through the hole in the
bottom of the clay pot. Drive it into the ground about 8 inches or so
and then fill the pot with potting soil. Next slide one of
the 6 inch pots onto the rod, upright, through the hole in the bottom.
Tilt the pot to one side in the top of the larger pot with the top edge
of the 6 inch pot against the rod. Thread the rest of the six inch pot
tilting them in alternate directions. Then, drive the rod down until it
rest just under the top lip of the last pot. Now, fill the 6 inch pots with soil and plant them and you are done.
