The Persian Shield plant “Strobialanthus dyerianus” was very popular in Victorian times and is now making a come back. It’s 8-inch-long leaves are iridescent in shades of purple, lilac and pink, with purple-maroon on the back.
Persian Shield is an evergreen herbaceous shrub in Zones 10-11. In Zones 8 and 9 it dies back in the winter and comes back in the spring if it has a protection of mulch to insulate it. Even in areas where it will not survive the winter it can be grown as a summer bedding plant. This plant can grow to 3 to 4 feet tall and a spread of 3 feet. It benefits from regular pinching to keep its shape.
Persian Shield likes a well drained soil and partial shade or direct sun in the morning, with afternoon shade. This plant is not drought tolerant and should be watered before the soil dries out completely. If it is grown as a house plant it benefits from frequent misting. Also keep the house hold temperature above 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
Persian Shield is reported to be a plant that deer avoid.
This plant is in a 2.5 inch pot.
