The Citronella Geranium “Pelargonium citrosum" is also called the Mosquito Plant. It has a citronella fragrance, but it is not the source ofcitronella oil. Citronella oil comes from a tropical grass.
Citronella Geranium is sold as mosquito plant or citrosa geranium in many stores. There is a lot of speculation on this plant, many people state it keeps mosquitoes away while recent research show it is ineffective in repelling them. In the test the mosquitoes actually landed on the plant to rest.
It is a beautiful, fragrant plant that everyone should have none the less. It also has small lavender flowers.
The Citronella Geranium is an annual plant which grows to about 2 feet tall. It has deeply serrated green leaves that give of a citronella fragrance when disturbed. It does best in full sun light. It needs a well drained soil with a good source on nitrogen and a pH of 6.5. This plant also benefits from good air circulation. The plant must be moved inside before the first frost if it is to be wintered over. It is hardy in Zone 8B to 11.
