One of the best low growing ground covers is Creeping Thyme. Creeping Thyme, (Thymus serpyllum), is one of those easy to grow plants
that survive nicely with little or no care. A native to Northern
Europe, it is similar in plant structure to Garden Thyme but tends to
be lower growing (shorter stems between leaves) and spreading in habit.
It is an excellent ground cover or lawn substitute and can be used for culinary purposes. Once established, it is drought tolerant and requires little to moderate amounts of water. It prefers well drained soil.
Creeping Thyme is generally described as a Perennial Subshrub or Perennial Herb. And
because Creeping Thyme is a long-lived perennial, hardy just about
everywhere in the U.S., you can expect years of beauty from this sturdy aromatic
groundcover. Plant creeping thyme in rock gardens, walls, bare spots in
sunny beds and borders, and just about anywhere that needs some quick,
permanent coverage. It doesn't require mowing, much watering or care,
yet it looks nice and can even tolerate being walked-on.
This low growing plant is often planted between the stones or bricks in garden paths for its beauty and sweet aroma. Creeping Thyme has slender, creeping stems and round leaves with deep pink lavender blooms and heavenly fragrance. It can withstand light foot traffic and gives off pleasant aroma when walked upon. The blooms attract bees and butterflies to the garden. It can also be used as a container plant.
Creeping Thyme has a wide variety of uses as an herb for cooking, in teas and medicines. It has been used for its reported properties in decongestants, as an antiseptic, cough remedy and a digestive aid.
